GEALE CONFIDENT AHEAD OF COTTO CLASH
By TOM WATT on May 27 2015
With the big fight between Miguel Cotto and Daniel Geale only a couple of weeks away, attention in the Cotto camp seems to be divided with the WBC Champion seemingly having half an eye on a future bout with Mexican superstar, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez having verbally agreed to fight him (as per FightHype) later this year. With Cotto fighting for the first time in a year there is already the risk of some ring-rust and this kind of added distraction may be just what Daniel Geale needs if he is to overcome the odds and win his 3rd Word Title at Middleweight.
With this fight in Cotto’s second home of New York and at his requested catch-weight, the Puerto-Rican will go into the fight as a heavy favourite but Geale, who last fought in December, is confident he has what it takes to topple to the Future Hall-Of-Famer as he made clear in his media workout in New York last week:
“Cotto has trouble in stages against guys that move and use their reach. He knows that what I’m going to be doing and he’s going to be trying to counter that with aggression and coming forward. I’m going to use my abilities and not get caught up in his game plan. I’m going to fight my fight.”
“I want this one badly. It’s something we have wanted for a while and I’m extremely excited. I’ve got guys like Gary Shaw and my team at the Grange from Australia and they are working very hard behind the scenes. I’m just going to worry about my job and they do their job greatly. I just worry about getting myself in perfect condition.”
Geale has been chasing this fight from the minute he defeated fellow Aussie, Jarrod Fletcher in Sydney last December (See our post-fight interview with Daniel here) and if he is able to put in the kind of pure boxing display that was on show that night he has every chance of pulling off the upset and bringing that famous green belt back to Australia with him. Geale is the naturally bigger man and will need to utilise his reach and natural advantages to their fullest in order to overcome the defending Champion.
