SHANE MOSLEY vs RICARDO MAYORGA - AGAIN!
By TOM WATT on July 9 2015
After months of speculation it appears that future Hall Of Famer ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley has decided to step back into the ring one more time and has confirmed that he will face controversial star, Ricardo Mayorga at the end of August. Both men have been relatively inactive over the past few years but that will not dampen the excitement of seeing two former World Champions step back in between the ropes.
Mosley has been hinting at a return for some time now, even as far back as September last year when we caught up to discuss Anthony Mundine’s fight with Sergey Rabchenko – since then Mosley has been mainly focussed on helping his son’s fledgling career but the desire to fight has never truly left him and the California native is keen for one last bite of the cherry before hanging up the gloves for good, particularly after bumping into a trash-talking Mayorga in Vegas recently.
Mosley’s last fight saw him travel down under to face Australia’s Anthony Mundine (Now angling for a shot at Floyd Mayweather) in a fight that began in controversial circumstances (having been re-scheduled due to lack of payments) and ended in Mosley retiring in his corner, Mundine was too big and too strong for the American that night and many thought it would be the last we saw of ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley. That has changed though and we can now look forward to seeing him back in action against his former foe in Mayorga.
Mayorga has fought twice in 2014 but had been inactive for two years prior to those bouts – with Mayorga’s penchant for partying, drinking and smoking, one has to question how well his body will cope at being thrown back into the lion’s den although the man once described by Ring Magazine as the ‘craziest man in the sport’ is not someone who will go down without a fight. With Mayorga known for his relentless trash-talking and Mosley becoming more and more vocal on Social Media, expect some fireworks from either side as this fight edges closer. Mosley already fired a few shots off from his Twitter account (See some of Mosley’s Tweets at the bottom of this page).
Mosley will also be making history having confirmed that for the first time in history, a father and son will fight on the same card with Shane Jr, a 4-1 Middleweight prospect set to fight on the undercard – just another twist in this already fascinating tale.
The last time Mosley and Mayorga met it was Mosley who took the win via an exciting 12th round stoppage after a very tightly contested bout, judges scorecard’s were split at the time and it would be no surprise if this came down to the wire as well. Much will depend on how much ring rust both men have to shake off but if they both come in to the ring close to 100% then this should be a great fight for all fans with the added spice of nostalgia set to heighten the interest from the more seasoned of Boxing aficionado.
Mosley and Mayorga are set to face off August 29th at a yet-to-be-named venue in Los Angeles.
