THE RETURN OF THE MAGIC MAN
By TOM WATT on May 15 2015
After months of speculation it seems as though the fans are getting what they’ve been asking for, a return to the ring of the Magic Man, everyone’s favourite Boxing Analyst/Commentator, Paulie Malignaggi on May 29th at the Barclays Center in his home of Brooklyn as part of the Amir Khan Vs Chris Algieri card as part of Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions series.
Malignaggi has become a firm favourite among fans for his expert analysis at ringside and frank interviews but is putting the mic aside to give Boxing one more go and step back into the ring for the first time since his brutal 4th round KO defeat at the hands of Shawn Porter for the IBF Welterweight Title in April 2014. As a former Junior-Welterweight and Welterweight World Champion Malignaggi will no doubt be harboring ambitions of a marquee name in the future and has talked of fighting Kell Brook in the UK (where he has a huge fan-base) or even looking at fighting for a European Title that he would be eligible for via his Italian ancestry. For now though he must focus on getting past Danny O’Connor.
O’Connor is a good fighter for Malignaggi to come up against in his first fight in over a year, the southpaw Irish-American isn't known as a heavy-hitter with only 9 KOs in his 25 wins and with the manner of his defeat to Porter he will be glad to not be facing another powerful fighter off the bat. O’Connor will come into the fight prepared though, Malignaggi is far away and away is biggest opponent to date and he will be looking to take his chances and make a name for himself.
"My supporters and I have been waiting a long time for an opportunity like this on the big stage," O'Connor said. "It's a throwback match-up -- Irish versus Italian, Boston versus New York. I'll be bringing down busloads of people, and I'm sure he's going to have a big hometown crowd. I've never been more ready for the challenge that lies ahead of me."
This fight certainly adds spice to the Khan Algieri card and the draw of the ever-popular hometown fighter is likely to create a fantastic atmosphere in the Barclays Center as it has done on the four previous occasions the Magic Man has fought there including the all-Brooklyn battle between himself and Zab Judah in December 2013. Malignaggi has always maintained that he would not fight on in the sport beyond his means and May 29th will give us a good indication of whether or not we will see him take on the Sport’s big names again or if he will just be talking about them.
