SAVVA CHASES WINNER OF BRUBAKER GEORGE
By Tom Watt on Sep 11 2017
For years now, the welterweight division has been one of the deepest in World Boxing and with Australia now holding one of the major belts through Queenslander, Jeff Horn, Australians have a good reason to feel optimistic. Horn is currently lining up his first title defence following his win over Manny Pacquiao earlier this year and is widely expected to face either Jessie Vargas or Bradley Skeete in November. A few weeks before that, several of the country’s top welterweights will be showcasing their talents in Sydney at the ‘Jonny Lewis Ultimate Fight Night’ at Star City Casino.
In one of the stand-out fights of the evening, Jack Brubaker (13-1-) faces Kris George (12-1-0) for the George's Commonwealth Title that he won by defeating Cameron Hammond, a highly coveted belt, previously held by the likes of Amir Khan and Junior Witter, that will guarantee a World Ranking boost and open many doors for future opponents. This will be a hotly contested bout and the winner will be seen as the second-best Welterweight in Australia, behind ‘The Hornet’ and will be hoping for an all-Aussie showdown in the future.
However, before they chase the bigger fights the Commonwealth Title may bring, there may be a challenge from another emerging talent that features on the undercard in the shape of Ben Savva (7-1-0) who, having lost his first professional fight, has put together and impressive seven straight victories under the tutelage of Adam Watt and will be looking to put himself in the shop window with an impressive performance at Star City.
As well as a credible amateur career in the UK, Savva is no stranger to the welterweight elites in Australia and helped Jeff Horn prepare for his World Title Eliminator against Ali Funeka and is more than confident in his ability to pick up a win over either Brubaker or George.
“To fight the winner of Brubaker v George is definitely what I am aiming for and something that has been in my sights for a while. All I’m doing though is concentrating on myself and making sure I make a statement on October 22nd that is impossible to ignore."
"I’ve been watching both guys for a while and think my style suits them, I’d be confident of a win if I was given the chance, I just have to make sure I do my part”
Savva’s opponent is yet to be named for the October 22nd clash although one is expected to be named imminently with matchmaker, Chris Carman hoping to announce something very soon. Watch this space for more news.
