VARGAS IN POLE POSITION FOR HORN CLASH
By Tom Watt on Sep 5 2017
Following the news that Manny Pacquiao had withdrawn from his protracted rematch with WBO Champion Jeff Horn later this year, it now appears that his Top Rank stable-mate and former foe, Jessie Vargas (27-2-0) is the front-runner to take his place and challenge the Hornet in November at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
Vargas is a highly-respected welterweight who’s only 2 losses have come up against Tim Bradley in 2015 in his first attempt at the WBO Welterweight crown and then against Manny Pacquiao a year later. A fight against Horn will give Vargas a chance to regain the Title he lost against Pacquiao as well as a chance to avenge that loss, an opportunity any fighter would relish.
Prior to his loss to Pacquiao, Vargas had built a strong reputation for himself with convincing wins over Sadam Ali, Khabib Allakhverdiev and Joesito Lopez probably the stand-out names on his resume. He has held World Titles in 2 weight divisions, and was once touted as one of the most exciting fighters in the sport – at only 28 years old Vargas is only coming into his physical prime and will be looking to regain the momentum he had two years ago.
On the flip-side, having man-handled and defeated the man who did the same to Vargas less than year ago, Horn will feel that a fight with Vargas is tailor-made for him to look good against a top-name opponent. Having come up from the 140lbs division, Vargas is a naturally smaller man (as was Pacquiao) and this will suit Horn down to the ground stylistically. Further to that, beating another Top Rank fighter on US TV will only serve to increase his brand stateside, make the eventual Pacquiao rematch even bigger – should it go ahead next year as expected.
Vargas visiting Australia will not generate the same level of hype as the visit of the Pac-Man, but it will have Boxing fans excited around the country to see a genuine rising talent on these shores and credit must go to Duco Promotions for this. Horn’s trainer, Glen Rushton, has stated they would like to have an opponent confirmed this week so it shouldn’t be too long before all is confirmed.
