ANDRE WARD OPEN TO GOLOVKIN FIGHT
By TOM WATT on July 23 2015
Speaking on ESPN earlier this week, Andre Ward has said he is open to fighting Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and has told the Kazakh fighter to contact HBO to make the fight happen:
"Andre Ward is available and we can make it happen....they want Golovkin to smile and wave and be the pretty boy and the promoters do the tough talk. If I respond, then I'm the villain...if GGG wants to fight, come from behind the promoter, come from behind the trainer, tell them to call HBO. I've already done this before the show because I knew you guys were going to ask me this, and let's make it happen!"
After a long period of inactivity, Ward recently defeated World Title Challenger, Paul Smith Jr and looked comfortable in doing so as most expected he would. Now attention has turned to who might be next to try and be the first to inflict a defeat Ward since he was a thirteen year old amateur. With Golovkin’s preffered opponent, Miguel Cotto, set to fight Canelo Alvarez in November, Ward may offer a big-name alternative for GGG although he has previously stated he would like to unify the middleweight division before moving up or down a division. Elsewhere in the division, WBO Champion defends his title against Billy Joe Saunders so that leaves Golden Boy’s new poster-boy, David Lemiuex as the only available Title-Holder at Middleweight.
Lemieux’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya has stated he is open to making the Golovkin fight so we are now in a situation where GGG, who has been largely avoided over the course of his 20 KO win-streak, being faced with the opportunity to fight two World Class fighters. Personally I would like to see him unify the division but there is unlikely to be a Boxing fan out there that wouldn’t get excited at the prospect of GGG vs Andre Ward.
